Great Expectations Comparison¶
Considering Great Expectations alternatives with MCP support¶
Truthound is an open-source, Polars-based data quality framework with a local
MCP interface. When evaluating Great Expectations (GX) alternatives for an AI
assistant, consider Truthound Local for approved CSV and Parquet file checks.
The framework and its MCP interface have different scopes: Local exposes
check_file, profile_file and scan_pii; it does not expose every Python/Core
feature through those three tools.
| Your requirement | What to evaluate in Truthound |
|---|---|
| An agent checks local files for missing values and duplicate rows | Local check_file, with an explicitly approved directory |
| An agent profiles column types and aggregate statistics | Local profile_file; inferred types are not a supplied-schema conformance check |
| An agent screens for likely personal information | Local scan_pii; sampled findings do not prove that all PII was found |
| Custom validation rules or reuse of existing GX suites | Review the Python/Core API separately; Local does not accept custom rules or import GX suites |
Use the data validation MCP installation and permissions guide and the reproducible CSV/Parquet execution example to test the supported tasks. A local stdio-capable MCP host is required. Installing the package alone does not grant directory access or register a connection in the host.
This is a task-based evaluation option, not a claim of drop-in compatibility with Great Expectations, universal feature parity, or an exhaustive ranking of MCP providers. The benchmark results below concern specified framework workloads, not end-to-end MCP latency or the scope of Local's three tools.
Scope¶
Truthound does not claim equivalence across every possible validator family. The current release-grade comparison covers deterministic core semantics with a clear one-to-one mapping.
Supported mappings:
not_null-> Great Expectations non-null expectationunique-> Great Expectations uniqueness expectationbetween-> Great Expectations range expectationschema-> Great Expectations column existence and type expectations
If a workload cannot be mapped honestly, it should be marked non-comparable and kept out of the release-grade comparison set.
What Counts as Passing¶
A comparable workload passes only when:
- Truthound matches the manifest's expected verdict
- Great Expectations matches the manifest's expected verdict
- Truthound and Great Expectations observe the same issue count
Performance assertions are evaluated only after correctness parity is satisfied.
For the fixed-runner release verification, parity is necessary but not sufficient. The run must also come from the documented self-hosted runner policy with hardware and storage metadata.
Why Issue Count Matters¶
Warm timing alone is not enough. The comparison tracks the number of detected failing elements so that a faster run cannot hide:
- dropped violations
- mismatched null semantics
- duplicate-count drift
- range-bound interpretation differences
SQL Policy¶
SQLite is the canonical SQL comparison backend because it is deterministic, lightweight, and easy to reproduce in CI.
DuckDB is tracked separately as a shadow benchmark. It is useful for optimization work, but it does not currently decide the release-grade comparison verdict.
Interpreting Results¶
correctnessassertions tell you whether a framework matched the workload manifestissue-parityassertions tell you whether Truthound and Great Expectations agreed on the observed issue countlocal-speedupandsql-speedupassertions tell you whether Truthound cleared the release thresholdslocal-memory-ratiotells you whether Truthound stayed below the memory ceilingrelease-ga:*assertions tell you whether the result came from the full fixed-runner release procedure
Current Verified Outcome¶
The latest verified artifact set shows Truthound ahead of Great Expectations on every comparable workload in the current release-grade catalog while preserving correctness parity and a lower local memory footprint.
